‘Al Duomo’ on Via Duomo, Verona
The local Veronese restaurant, Al Duomo, was off the beaten tourist track in a picturesque part of Verona. I have travelled in Italy when I was in my early 20’s and my priority when it came to food was to be as cheap as possible. I was determined on this trip to experience some great authentic local Italian food (a challenge as there are so many tourist traps in the major Italian cities).
I came across a recommendation of Al Duomo on a food travellers blog prior to my visit and sought it out when we arrived in Verona. It was exactly what I was hoping it would be….. a tiny rustic, ‘off the beaten track’, non-english speaking local restaurant.
The wooden beams and old brick walls, add to the authentic experience. The menu was small and full of dishes that incorporate Veronese donkey and horse meat. Many of the foodie blogs I had read suggested the horse tartar and donkey bigoli, to be among their favorite meals in Italy however I wasn’t felling that adventurous this evening so stuck to a beef ragu which was divine. The al dente pasta was perfection – I finally believe that authentic Italian food is incredible.
Very moderately priced.
